The purpose of our Fort Mill History Preservation Committee, chaired by Elizabeth Ford, is to preserve the rich history of Fort Mill South Carolina, while documenting our current history.
Current goals of this committee are to:
- Document Fort Mill's history of families, business/industry, government, schools, law enforcement, fire department, military, cemeteries, churches, streets with historical meaning, historic homes, and historic sites.
- Produce a documentary of Fort Mill's history that will include histories from living historians; pictorial histories from photos collected, and printed materials.
- Design and print a complete map of the Fort Mill area with highlighted historic sites, schools, municipal buildings and other information often requested by residents and visitors to our community.
- Produce a "coffee table" book of Fort Mill's history to include rare photographs of the past along with documentation.
- Establish a Fort Mill History Museum in the historic district.
In an effort to preserve the history of Fort Mill as viewed through the eyes of one of our town's past distinguished citizens, J. B. Mills, our first history DVD was completed in May of 2009.

A Moment in History
"A Fort Mill Treasure"
Written by: Elizabeth Ford, Historic Preservation Committee Chair
One of Fort Mill's treasures was also one of its biggest characters -- J. B. Mills, Jr. He could find anything you needed, or something better, in his hardware store; give you a home remedy for whatever was hurting you; give you a golf lesson; tell you what to plant and when to plant it; or tell you how many snows to expect this year.
Mr. J. B. was one of Fort Mill's great athletes. He excelled in football and pole vaulting at Fort Mill High School, but he played all sports. He loved softball, golf, bowling, as well as 'donkey basketball' and 'donkey baseball'. The picture to the right is J.B. (cigar in his mouth).
Mr. J. B. loved his hometown and knew everyone in it. His family had owned a business in downtown Fort Mill since the early days. He not only loved his hometown, he treasured its history. J. B. kept a huge scrapbook with pictures going back to the late 1800's.
He and James Patterson made a slide show of some of the early years and J.B. narrated. These slides have been digitally reproduced as a DVD, "A Walk through Historic Fort Mill". The picture to the left, which is the oldest one we have located of downtown Main Street, is a part of that DVD.
The DVD's are available for $20.00 at the Move Fort Mill Forward office in the Red Caboose at the bottom of Main Street. For more information, go to the gifts page, E-mail: Info@MoveFortMillForward.com, or call 803-547-1002.

Move Fort Mill Forward invited the community to attend a public viewing on January 16, 2010 of a very rare film that was shot in Fort Mill in 1942.
The film is 40 minutes long and contains scenes of citizens going about their daily lives at the mills, schools, businesses, Paradise community and the streets of downtown Fort Mill.
This film was last shown in Fort Mill 68 years ago at The Majestic Theater on Confederate Street, which stood where the municipal parking lot is now located across from the town hall.
Here are some of the pictures seen in the film
