WAR BIRDS: Diary of an Unknown Aviator

War Birds: Diary of an Unknown Aviator tells the story of three young Southerners who flew with the Royal Air Force in World War I and whose wild escapades earned them the nickname ‘The Three Musketeers.’

Picture of War Birds Book cover Elliott White Springs, a South Carolinian was one of those aces. Springs distrusted the war and its promoters. In June 1918 Springs was on a two man patrol in enemy territory with his friend John MacGavock Grider when Grider disappeared in the clouds. It was later confirmed that he had been shot down and killed by a German pilot.

Springs felt responsible for his friend’s death and after the war presented Grider’s diary for publication as a serial in Liberty Magazine in 1926. It was a phenomenal success and drew over one million readers a week.

War Birds later became a bestselling book, inspiring a number of Hollywood films about the doomed World War I Pilots. The last printing of the book was done in 1951.

There was only one of the books found to be for sale in the US, which makes this a collector’s dream item.

Many thanks to the Springs/Close family who has graciously donated the remaining copies of that printing for the Move Fort Mill Forward's Historic Preservation Committee.

The books may be purchased, limit 3 to an individual. The price is $35.00.
